Oncolytic virotherapy: basic principles, recent advances and future directions

There is an ever-growing interest in oncolytic virotherapy and the possibilities it can offer in cancer treatment. Oncolytic viruses are very multifaceted and present themselves with many possibilities for battling cancer, starting from virus modification for specific targeting and ending with combining them with other cancer treatment methods. And above all else, oncolytic virotherapy is safe compared to other cancer treatment methods. A review article published in Nature informs about the principles and strategies of oncolytic virotherapy, as well as the possibilities of combining therapies. Nowadays there is a variety of oncolytic viruses in different stages of development. One of the viruses mentioned in this review is Rigvir, a genetically unmodified ECHO-7 virus with an exceptional safety profile.
